In the city of St. Petersburg, Russia, there is a beautiful event that goes on once a year, during the season of the midnight sun. The midnight sun is a natural occurring phenomenon that happens during the summer months in places that are close to the arctic circle or south of the arctic circle. In this phenomenon, the sun is visible even through the local midnight. Around June 21st in the north and December 22 in the south, the sun is visible for the full 24 hours.
The White Night Festival consists of a montage of classic ballet, operas and music events that include performances form a wide range of Russian dancers, signers, musicians, and actors. Sometimes international guest stars come to perform at the White Nights Festival, which makes it even more enjoyable. The second part of the festival is the Scarlet Sails celebration, and it is the culmination of the White Nights season. It is the largest public event anywhere in Russia, which an attendance of one million people, many who are still in college, both locally and internationally.
Scarlet Sails celebration is a spectacular display of firework splendour. It is a massive show celebrating the end of the school year. The other two events that take place is the massive carnival, where actors dress in period costumes and give performances. Finally there is that star performance in The Palace square that has attracted many famous people over the past years.
The festival begins in May, and ends all the way in July. But some performances take place before and after those dates.
